The term decay is used in dentistry to
describe the destruction of the structure of the teeth. Tooth decay can affect
the enamel and the dentin layer of the tooth. The enamel is located on the
outside while the dentin is located on the inside. Tooth decay takes
place when foods that have carbohydrates are left on the teeth. Carbs are
sugars and starches that have a negative effect on the teeth. Without proper
care, the bacteria from carbs are left in the mouth and will create plaque that
sticks to the teeth. The acid in the plaque will dissolve the enamel and create
cavities in the teeth.
So, how does one prevent
tooth decay? Are there steps you can take to lessen your chance of having
issues with your teeth involving decay? There are! Below are a few tips that
you can implement in an effort to lower your risk of developing tooth decay as
you age.
